Focus on boho fashion trend: different boho-styles and what to wear to get the perfect boho-look. Guest post by Australian fashion contributor and friend Sophia Smith.
Boho Look: Must-Have Essentials for a Free-Spirited Style
In the last couple of years, one of the most unique fashion trends is the boho or bohemian trend. This feminine, creative, natural and free-spirited style has influenced not only designers, but many celebrities, like Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Kirsten Dunst and Nicole Richie.
The origin of the word comes from the French “bohémien”, which was associated with the traveling Gipsy people who lived unconventional lives, outside the accepted norms of society. At the time the common belief was that they have originated from Bohemia, which, today, is a region in the Czech Republic.
Nowadays, this term refers to people who tend to break all the accepted rules and dogmatic stereotypes and live unusual (and a bit artistic) lives. This ideology created a unique fashion style, which is characterized by an inner harmony, peace and openness.
Boho Styles
Earlier, Bohemians wore whatever they had on hand, out of comfort and convenience. Today we have a couple of fractions of the boho-style which can be described like this:
- Hippie style. One of the most influential trends in boho-fashion. The main characteristic are colorfulness and patterns, long dresses and skirts, cropped shirts, unique jewelry and hair accessories.
- Edgy style. This unconventional and bold style is inseparable from open-minded boho. Capri or high waist pants, stiles, leather jacket and bold lipstick – great choices if you’re ready to leave your comfort zone.
- Romantic style. The spirit of boho is close to nature, love and peace. Therefore, it’s right for romantic souls. Delicate and airy dresses in different lengths will highlight the grace and gentleness of those values.

The Essence of Boho
Boho-style shares many similar characteristics with the hippie and the, so called, vintage look. Clothes are usually made from a soft and natural fabric, like linen, chiffon, lace, silk, velvet, cotton or knitwear and come in a palette of bright, natural colors in many different patterns, especially floral and ethnic ones. Greek, Roman or African motives are the most common inspiration for classic boho-look.

When it comes to the shoes, it’s important to feel comfortable in anything you’re wearing, so sky high heels or platforms are undesirable. On the other hand, accessories are a necessity. A lot of them. Bracelets, necklaces, earrings, belts, sunglasses, ribbons and bows – they’re all welcome.
How to Achieve the Boho-Style
Given that the essence of boho is authenticity and freedom, there are no strict rules. You should trust your instinct and be creative. Try mixing and matching different styles and pieces. Here are some tips on how to add the boho spirit to your look.
Explore the clothes you already have in your wardrobe and play with them. Everything gets along in boho – maxi dresses or skirts combined with tops or over-sized shirts.
Some of the typical bohemian style garments are colorful and airy dresses, ripped denim, tunics, kaftans, knitted sweaters or fur vests, so keep a lookout for these.
As you are combining pieces of clothing, combine the colors as well. Try combining different shades. Experiment by adding bold colored details in yellows, purples or blues to the traditionally neutral and earthy boho colors.

Choose the right accessories
Jewelry and accessories are simple a must-have. You should wear different materials, like wood, feathers or semiprecious stones, in all shapes and sizes, all over your body. Recognizable accessories are scarves, belts, head-accessories, fedora hats, turbans, retro sunglasses, etc.
In this case quantity does matter. Try to remain as authentic as possible. Find unique pieces on the flea market or even try to make them yourself.
Wear flat shoes – ballets or gladiator-like sandals. If you are looking for a more edgy look, cowboy boots are a good choice.
Natural make-up and hairstyle
Bohemian hairstyles are casual as everything else. So, release your hair, try a ponytail, experiment with curls, loose buns and don’t try to be perfect with them; they should look a bit messy.
The preferred make-up is natural and neutral. Apply just a little bit of foundation and a concealer where you need it, or try the strobing style. Desirable hues are beige, apricot, greys, browns or bronze, but if you put just a splash of a bold lipstick it will add a unique touch to your appearance.
Boho-style isn’t just about fashion. It’s also a lifestyle which promotes awareness towards the environment and the social circumstances. When you’re looking for boho pieces, explore small boutiques of local designers, flea-markets and secondhand shops. This way you’ll find unique items, while upholding the values of this particular style.
